What we show
- Adult general & acute (G&A) bed occupancy: beds open and beds occupied
- Adult critical care bed occupancy: beds open and beds occupied
- Both shown as a snapshot taken at 8am on the reported date
- Ambulance-to-A&E handover delays (from the separate NHS England Ambulance Handover / Daily Ambulance Collection): handovers over 30 and over 60 minutes, as a share of handovers with a known time, summed across the whole winter collection period
- Delayed discharges (from the separate NHS England Acute Discharge SitRep, 'no longer meets the criteria to reside'): the number of patients medically ready for discharge, how many were discharged, and how many remained in hospital, each summed over the most recent 7 days of the collection (a rolling 7-day total, to smooth the weekend discharge dip)
Caveats
- This is UNVALIDATED MANAGEMENT INFORMATION — NHS England's own label for this collection — and figures can be revised for up to 14 days after first publication.
- It is a measure of operational PRESSURE (how full the hospital is that morning), NOT a measure of care quality, and it carries no NHS pass mark or target. We show no colour grading, badge, or ranking for this dataset: high occupancy is normal for NHS hospitals, especially in winter, and is not itself a sign of a problem.
- The collection only runs during the winter period, so the 'latest' figure can be from several months ago outside that window — always check the date shown.
- Reported per trust — the same figures apply to every hospital the trust runs, always labelled 'Trust-wide'.
- A trust can appear in only one of the two bed-occupancy measures (for example, a trust that runs no adult critical-care beds) — we show whatever is present rather than inferring the other.
- The ambulance-handover figures are a WINTER-PERIOD TOTAL (summed across the whole daily timeseries in the Ambulance Handover collection), not an 8am snapshot like the bed-occupancy figures — a trust can appear in the handover data without appearing in the bed-occupancy sheets, or vice versa. Like bed occupancy, this measures operational/seasonal pressure, NOT care quality, and carries no colour grading, badge, or ranking.
- The delayed-discharge figures are a rolling 7-DAY TOTAL (summed over the most recent 7 daily columns in the Acute Discharge SitRep), not an 8am snapshot and not the whole winter period. 'No longer meets the criteria to reside' means a patient is medically ready to leave hospital — how quickly they then actually do mostly reflects social-care and community capacity to receive them, NOT the hospital's own clinical quality. Like the rest of this dataset, it carries no colour grading, badge, or ranking.
