What we show

  • Average health gain — the change in patients' self-reported health score, before surgery vs. several months after — for primary hip and primary knee replacement
  • The Oxford Hip/Knee Score (condition-specific, scored 0-48, higher is better) and the EQ-5D Index (general health, roughly 0-1, higher is better)
  • Both a raw average health gain and a case-mix-adjusted average health gain — a model NHS Digital fits to adjust for differences in patients' age, pre-operative health and other factors, intended to make trusts more fairly comparable. We lead with the adjusted figure.
  • The number of modelled records (patients with both a before and an after questionnaire) behind each figure
  • The number of patients whose score improved, stayed the same, or got worse after surgery

Caveats

  • This is a VOLUNTARY questionnaire: patients choose whether to complete it before and after their operation, so results reflect who chose to respond, not everyone treated — always read the patient-count (N) shown alongside the score.
  • The headline figure is CASE-MIX-ADJUSTED, a statistical model, not a raw measurement — it is intended to let trusts serving different patient populations be compared more fairly, but it remains a modelled estimate, not an exact figure.
  • This is NOT a ranking or league table. We show no badge and no colour-graded scale for this dataset — a lower adjusted gain at one trust is a prompt to look closer, not proof of worse care, and case-mix adjustment cannot capture every difference between patients.
  • Revision (repeat) hip and knee replacements, and the EQ VAS general-health measure, are collected by NHS Digital but not currently shown — we surface primary procedures and the Oxford Score / EQ-5D Index only.
  • Reported per trust — the same figures apply to every hospital the trust runs, always labelled 'Trust-wide'.
  • Independent-sector providers are not currently included, because our trust register (used to resolve every dataset on the site) only covers NHS trusts.
  • Small cells are suppressed by NHS Digital (shown as '*' in the source) for disclosure control; we show a figure as missing rather than infer or estimate a suppressed value.
  • Annual data: only the current financial year is loaded, so no trend is shown yet.
