What we show
- 'Met best practice criteria' — the audit's own composite measure of a hospital's hip-fracture care process
- Prompt surgery (day of, or day after, admission), mobilisation by the day after surgery, orthogeriatric/medical assessment, falls assessment and bone-health assessment — the individual care-process measures behind the composite
- Number of hip-fracture cases treated that audit year, and acute length of stay
- 30-day mortality, CASE-MIX ADJUSTED — not the audit's separate crude rate
Caveats
- 'Met best practice criteria' is the audit's own published composite quality measure — a legitimate published verdict from the audit body itself, which is why, like SSNAP, we show and rank it (see /hip-fracture).
- It measures the quality of a hospital's hip-fracture care PROCESSES over the audit year — how quickly patients had surgery, were assessed and mobilised — NOT a guarantee of any individual patient's outcome.
- The 30-day mortality figure shown is CASE-MIX ADJUSTED, never the crude rate. Lower is better, but it reflects one year of a hospital's hip-fracture cases and patient-factor adjustment, not any individual patient's personal risk — we frame it calmly, not as a red-alarm league position.
- A small-number-suppressed cell in the audit's own published workbook is shown as missing, never as zero.
- NHFD identifies each hospital by its own site code and name, not an ODS site code, so we match it to our hospital register by name. A small number of sites (for example where two live hospital registrations share an identical name under different trusts, or a hospital was renamed and we could not confirm a single obvious match) are not shown because we could not confidently attach the audit's figures to one specific hospital — we do not guess.
- England only for the purpose of this site's hospital and trust pages and the /hip-fracture ranking — NHFD also covers Wales, which is not shown here.
- Case counts are shown alongside every percentage — a hospital treating few hip fractures in a year can show more variation than one treating many.
