Estates Returns Information Collection (ERIC)
Published by NHS England · Official source
Update schedule
- Annual (financial year).
Level of detail
- Individual hospital site — one of the few datasets that distinguishes buildings within a trust
What we show
- Patient and visitor car-parking charge per hour, and the number of spaces (including disabled bays)
- Cost per inpatient meal (food service and ingredient cost divided by meals served)
- Number of single en-suite bedrooms
- Maintenance backlog — the cost to bring the estate up to standard — with the high-risk portion shown separately
Caveats
- Because ERIC is collected per building, these figures are specific to the hospital, not the whole trust.
- Only sites that submit an estates return appear; smaller units (dialysis, diagnostic centres, some community sites) often do not, so the section is simply absent for them.
- A large maintenance backlog reflects deferred investment, not day-to-day cleanliness or safety, which are covered by the CQC rating.
- Trusts self-report ERIC, and definitions of what counts as a 'site' can vary; treat cross-hospital comparisons as indicative.
